Severe burns over large portions of the body may be classified as catastrophic injuries. Victims may suffer permanent nerve damage, scarring, disfigurement, and other long-term symptoms from a severe burn.
Burn injuries fall into 4 broad classifications:
First-degree burns affect the outer layer of skin, called the epidermis. The affected area may appear red and slightly swollen, and will often heal without medical treatment. Second-degree burns affect the epidermis and the second layer of skin, known as the dermis.
The affected area may be red and swollen, and scarring from blisters may occur. Anti-inflammatory pain medication and ice packs may help heal second-degree burns.
Third-degree burns affect both layers of skin, as well as the adipose tissue (the layer of fat underneath the skin). The affected area may appear white, tan, leathery, or waxy. Nerve damage may occur, and it is important to seek immediate medical treatment.
Fourth-degree burns are the most severe. They affect both layers of skin, the adipose tissue, and the muscles, bones, and organs. Victims may feel no pain due to nerve damage, but emergency medical treatment is required. The affected area may be completely charred or blackened.
If you have suffered a third or fourth-degree burn injury at work, you could be facing years of rehabilitation, as well as surgery, skin grafts, medication, emotional therapy, physical therapy, and other treatment. Medical bills can quickly become overwhelming.
If your injury occurred while performing work activities, you have the right to pursue workers’ compensation benefits. You may be entitled to a settlement for medical expenses, lost wages, loss of earning potential, disability, and other damages.
